Our Curriculum:
Religion
Being a Catholic School. Religion in incorporated into every part of our day. The students will pray together as a class and as a school during masses, prayer services, stations of the cross, and reciting the rosary. Each day during our religion class the students learn about the Church community, our loving God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, and Jesus' Church of Followers. We will also being reading at upcoming school masses. We have also incorporated an interactive Saint notebook into our program. the children will be learning about a new saint each week. At the end of the year the students will have a notebook of saints to cherish and pray with.
Literacy
In our classroom, we have a balanced literacy block. Everyday throughout the year, I will read to the students during the read aloud, read and discuss working on comprehension to the students during shared reading, and the students will work and learn together in small differentiated groups during guided reading. During the word study portion of the balanced literacy block , I will provide systematic instruction in the building blocks of literacy- book and print awareness, phonemic awareness, phonics, and alphabetic principles.
Writing
The students will be writing on a daily basis. I model excellent writing for the students, share the pen with students, and conference with the children as they write independently.
Math
Our math series called, My Math. It is Common Core aligned. It focuses on addition, subtraction, word problems, place value, fact families, graphing , measurement, and geometry. The students have also been working on an interactive notebook that focuses on the state standards.
Science and Social Studies
The students will be using the Scholastic Weekly Reader, Time for Kids, and Science Spin, which are also aligned with the Common Core Learning Standards. We will be learning about many different themes including holidays. Our Ela modules also include science and social studies themes and units. The students will also be participating in many science experiments throughout the year.
